MANILA, Philippines - President Aquino supports the bill filed by Sen. Francis Escudero that seeks to ban the attachment of names of politicians to projects such as waiting sheds and trash bins. Senate Bill 2187 proposes that violators be imprisoned for a year and fined P100,000 to P1 million depending on the amount of the government project concerned. The bill, however, stipulates that the National Historical Commission of the Philippines may exempt projects depending on its guidelines or regulations. “I agree and President Aquino totally agrees with that,” presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said. “Taxpayers should not be represented by the proponents.” He said Mr. Aquino has two programs that he refused to be named after him. Escudero said attaching the names of politicians to government projects “falsely gives an inflated sense of accomplishment to public officials to their constituency.” “Filipinos have entrusted their money to the government by way of taxes. It is the people’s money not the public officials. Laying personal claim to it should be deemed criminal,” he said. LINK : www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=600191&publicationSubCategoryId=63
